National Grid Pylon - Access and Egress

MCP Environmental installed access steps to a high voltage pylon for National Grid in Sheffield.

National Grid Pylon - Access and Egress

National Grid required access steps to facilitate routine maintenance and inspection of the high voltage pylon set in dense vegetation. MCP groundworks included hand digging the ground for 30 sustainable pressure treated timber steps.

The works included infilling with 30mm gravel and installing a hand rail. As the site lay on the River Don flood plain it was critical to ensure sufficient drainage to allow surface water to disperse through the hard core and geo textile membrane.

Care was taken not to disturb local wildlife and vegetation using hand tools. The steps allow for easy access to the site during all weathers to reduce distribution down time and engineer site visits.

The pylon carries high voltage overhead lines and is integral to the electricity distribution for the Yorkshire region.
